Head Start Simplifies Enrollment

Head Start Simplifies Enrollment for SNAP Recipients

04.24.2022 - Oneonta, N.Y.

Per communication from the National Office of Head Start, Opportunities for Otsego may now accept proof of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to determine eligibility for Head Start services.

Previously, Head Start only considered Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) to determine categorical eligibility under the “public assistance” classification. Including SNAP within this definition will streamline the application process and make it easier for families to enroll children in services.

To qualify for Head Start, families must be pregnant or have a child under five years of age and meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Household income up to 130% of Federal Poverty Level*
  • Family is receiving or eligible for TANF, SSI or SNAP benefits
  • Child is experiencing homelessness
  • Child is in foster care

Eligible households may start an online application for Early Head Start or Head Start by clicking here. For additional information, contact Heather Fay at 607.433.8055 or hfay@ofoinc.org.
