Statement on New York State Funding Cuts to Victim Services

Opportunities for Otsego thanks New York State Senator Peter Oberacker (District 51) and his fellow Representatives for recognizing and responding to the significant cuts to victim service programs across New York State.
Here in Otsego County, Opportunities for Otsego’s core New York State contract supporting the Violence Intervention Program was reduced by over $225,000 annually; nearly half of the previous award. This reduction creates a significant gap in resources for our friends and neighbors who may have nowhere else to turn during times of crisis and heightened danger.
Opportunities for Otsego’s program, finance, and fund development staff are working diligently to pursue every available opportunity to sustain critical services for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other violent crimes. Within days of learning about the reduction, our teams began preparing two federal grant applications to help bridge the funding gap. These applications require an extraordinary amount of work on tight timelines, and funding is never guaranteed.
Opportunities for Otsego remains committed to being there when people need us most. We are doing everything legally allowable and within our organizational capacity to sustain quality, responsive services for victims in our community.
