Internships

Early Childhood Services offers internships through the following programs:


Head Start: A comprehensive preschool program that helps children from low-income families develop the early reading and math skills they need to be successful in school. Center-based services promote school readiness and enhance social development of children ages 3 through 5. Head Start also works with families through goal development and accessing community resources.

Early Head Start: Home-based and center-based programming for low-income families with infants and toddlers and pregnant women. The program promotes healthy prenatal outcomes, enhances child development, and healthy family functioning. Early Head Start offers families weekly home visits, assistance in goal development, and access to community resources.


Educational Experiences:

  • Hands-on experience in:
    • Program design, management, and administration
    • Infant/Toddler or Preschool education including children with disabilities
    • Health services including dental health and mental wellness
    • Nutrition services
    • Family and community partnerships including home visiting and parent involvement
  • Introduction to future networking contacts
  • Potential earning of at least 3 college credits


Hours:

  • Experiences often require a minimum of 120 clock hours over a college semester or summer session
  • Flexible days and hours available

  • Family and Consumer Sciences


Application Process:

    1. Coordinate placement through a supervising professor. Direct inquiries for independent study are welcome.
    2. Submit an Intern Application
    3. Interview with Site Supervisor
    4. Complete agency documentation upon acceptance

      1. New York State Central Registry Clearance (Depending on placement)
      2. Medical Clearance (Depending on placement)
      3. Fingerprinting/Background Check (Depending on placement)
      4. Confidentiality Pledge

Victim Services offers internships through the following program:


Violence Intervention Program: Comprehensive program providing support to adult and child victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and violent crimes. The program provides a 24-hour crisis hotline, individual and group counseling, advocacy and legal/medical accompaniment, education to schools and community groups, and safe housing.


Educational Experiences:

  • Hands-on experience in:
    • Client intake and/or counseling sessions
    • Accompanying clients to court, police departments, or the Department of Social Services
    • Answering the 24-Hour Crisis Hotline
    • Community education and outreach
    • Community awareness activities (i.e. Take Back the Night, Crime Victims Awareness Month, Sexual Assault Awareness Month, or Domestic Violence Awareness Month)
  • Assist program staff with
    • Coordinating activities for residents of the safe house
    • Providing child care
    • General office duties including documentation and data entry
  • Introduction to future networking contacts
  • Potential earning of at least 3 college credits

Hours:

  • Experiences require a minimum commitment of 6-8 hours per week.
  • Flexible days and hours available

  • Child and Family Development
  • Criminal Justice
